Environmental and quality certifications are playing an increasingly important role in the selection of infrastructure for meetings, conferences and business events. In Poland’s MICE industry, two standards are also of particular importance: LEED, which focuses on sustainable building and environmental performance, and WELL, which places emphasis on health, safety and the well-being of building users. In practice, these systems are increasingly becoming a source of competitive advantage for hotels and conference venues responding to the needs of the green meetings market and the growing ESG-related requirements within the meetings and events sector.
LEED – the broadest group of certified venues
In the Polish meetings market, venues holding LEED certification clearly represent the larger and more visible group. According to the database of the Polish Green Building Council (PLGBC), LEED certification is already present in many hotels across the country’s largest cities, covering both urban properties serving conferences and corporate events, as well as leisure venues with extensive event infrastructure.
From the perspective of the MICE industry, LEED is becoming an important argument in the venue selection process, especially for corporate clients and international organisers, who are increasingly taking environmental considerations and ESG policies into account in their procurement decisions.
The LEED certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is awarded to properties that meet requirements in areas related to the sustainable design, construction and operation of a building. Depending on the selected system and version, the assessment covers elements such as location and transport, sustainable sites, water management, energy efficiency, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, as well as innovation and regional priorities.
LEED is based on a points system, and the number of points achieved determines the certification level – from Certified, through Silver and Gold, to Platinum. For the meeting planners, this means that a LEED-certified venue demonstrates not only high-quality infrastructure, but also more responsible resource management and a reduced environmental impact.
Cities in Poland with LEED-certified venues
Warsaw is the strongest represented market, with the following certified MICE venues on the list: Puro Hotel Warszawa Stare Miasto (Canaletta), Puro Hotel Warszawa Centrum, Nobu Hotel Warsaw, Four Points by Sheraton Warsaw Mokotów, The Westin Warsaw, and Sound Garden Hotel Warsaw.
The capital, therefore, offers one of the country’s widest selections of hotels, combining business-standard facilities with a verified approach to sustainable building management, thereby strengthening its position as a destination for international meetings and events.
The second key hub is Kraków, where the following venues hold LEED certification: Ibis Styles Kraków Centrum, Puro Hotel Kraków Stare Miasto, Puro Hotel Kraków Kazimierz, Unity Hotel Kraków and Unity Residence.
In Wrocław, the list includes Hotel Element Wrocław and Puro Hotel Wrocław Stare Miasto.
In other important urban and leisure destinations, certified venues include: Puro Hotel Łódź Centrum in Łódź, Puro Hotel Poznań Stare Miasto in Poznań, Puro Hotel Gdańsk Stare Miasto and the hotel developments Siennicka 5 and Nad Stawem 13 in Gdańsk, Sopot Marriott Resort & Spa in Sopot, as well as Baltic Park Molo Hotels in Świnoujście.
From the perspective of business event organisers, this has considerable practical significance. LEED is now a clear signal that a venue operates in line with standards related to energy efficiency, environmental impact reduction, and responsible building design and operation. For corporate clients and associations increasingly incorporating environmental criteria into their procurement policies, such certification can be an important factor in the venue selection process.
WELL certificate in Poland – fewer venues, but a clear direction of development
The situation looks different in the case of WELL certification. In Poland, the number of publicly confirmed MICE venues holding this standard is currently significantly smaller than in the case of LEED, but their importance for the market is very clear. WELL focuses not so much on the building as a technical object, but rather on the quality of the indoor environment, safety, comfort and the wellbeing of those using the space. This is precisely why the standard is gaining particular importance in the context of modern business meetings, where the quality of the delegate experience is becoming increasingly important.
WELL, in turn, includes a set of criteria relating to the health and comfort of building users. Among the most important areas are air, water, nourishment, light, movement, thermal and acoustic comfort, as well as mental and social well-being. This standard is performance-based, meaning that beyond design and operational solutions themselves, verification of the building’s actual performance parameters is also highly significant, including measurements concerning air quality, water, light or acoustics. For the event organisers, such certification is particularly relevant because it indicates that the venue has been designed and is managed with the health, safety and comfort of event participants in mind.
The most important confirmed example in Poland remains Warsaw and the Warsaw HUB complex. According to statements from Ghelamco, Crowne Plaza Warsaw – The HUB, Holiday Inn Express Warsaw – The HUB, and the conference centre operating there have obtained the WELL Health-Safety Rating. At the same time, the Warsaw HUB hotel complex was designed with the meetings market in mind and offers more than 1,400 m² of conference space, clearly positioning it among the capital’s important venues for the MICE industry.

LEED and WELL and the development of sustainable events in Poland
From the perspective of the meetings industry in Poland, it is clear that LEED is currently creating a broader base of venues that can be incorporated into MICE market offers, especially in the conference hotel segment. WELL remains a more selective standard, but at the same time, it can serve as a strong differentiator wherever safety, wellbeing and the quality of the delegate experience matter most. Both systems, however, point to the same direction of change: the development of infrastructure for business meetings is becoming increasingly closely linked with sustainable design, responsible management and the creation of spaces that respond to the needs of modern organisers and event participants.
In practice, this means that certification will gain importance not only in venues’ marketing communication, but also in procurement processes, bid proposals and in building the competitive advantage of destinations. For Poland’s MICE industry, this marks an important stage in the market’s maturation, in which sustainable events, green meetings and ESG in MICE are ceasing to be merely a trend and are becoming an increasingly concrete criterion in venue selection.
It is also worth noting that office buildings, rather than hotels or congress centres, currently dominate the Polish Green Building Council’s WELL database. This means that the WELL segment within Polish MICE remains, for the time being, clearly smaller than LEED. This conclusion is based on a review of public WELL entries in the PLGBC database.
